A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run backwards. In summer it moves heat out of the house; in winter it moves heat in. That is the entire concept, and everything else is detail.
Modern variable-speed heat pumps hold a temperature better than anything else on the market, because they run continuously at low output instead of cycling. In the shoulder months — the sixty-degree mornings and seventy-five-degree afternoons — nothing else comes close.

The honest version
Heat pumps are oversold in some markets and dismissed in others. Here is where we actually land.
They work in the cold now
Cold-climate models hold useful capacity well below freezing. The old advice about heat pumps quitting at 40°F is two equipment generations out of date.
The air feels different
Supply air runs cooler than a furnace, so it feels less blasting and more constant. Some people love it immediately. It is worth knowing before, not after.
Dual fuel is often the right answer
Heat pump above freezing, gas furnace below. You get the efficiency for most of the season and the furnace on the handful of nights it earns its keep.
It is not automatically cheaper
Whether it lowers your bill depends on your electric rate, your gas rate and your insulation. We will run your actual numbers rather than quote a national average.

Quoted as an installed system with the alternative — straight AC and furnace — priced next to it, so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it. Any available utility or manufacturer rebate is applied to the quote, not held back as a surprise discount.
Answers before you have to call and ask
A correctly sized cold-climate model will, and where it might struggle we recommend dual fuel so the furnace covers the coldest nights. We size for your design temperature, not for a brochure.
The wall heads are visible, there is no way around that. Ceiling cassettes and slim ducted units are alternatives where the room allows. For a bonus room that has never been comfortable, most people decide they can live with it.
Modern variable-speed units are markedly quieter than a single-stage AC because they spend most of their time at low speed. Placement matters too — we will not put it under a bedroom window if there is any alternative.
